It seems the world has gone crazy for Cockapoo dogs. And why not? They’re lovable friendly dogs! If you’re thinking about adopting a Cockapoo dog, knowing this dog’s characteristics, health issues and exercise needs will help you make an informed decision.
Cockapoo Dog History
Cockapoo dogs are considered “designer” dogs. They’re a cross between a Cocker Spaniel (American Cocker Spaniel or English Cocker Spaniel) and a Poodle.
The Poodle used to breed Cockapoos is usually a toy poodle or miniature poodle. Cockapoos have been around since the 1950s. However, the term “designer dog” gives the impression that the dogs have only recently been bred.
Why get a Cockapoo instead of a Poodle or Cocker Spaniel?
Very simple. You get the best of both worlds with Cockapoo dogs. Cockapoo dogs are a combination of the outgoing, loving personality of the Cocker Spaniel and the low-shedding, low dander qualities of the Poodle.
Cockapoo Dog Size and Temperament
Cockapoos are high energy and very friendly. Cockapoo dogs are also easy to train. This is a super happy dog. They’re great with kids and get along well with other dogs. Cockapoos are the perfect size.
They’re 10 to 15 inches in height and weigh from 12-24 pounds. This cross breed is easy to cuddle up with while big enough to frolick with other bigger dogs.
Cockapoo Dog Health
The life span of healthy Cockapoo Dogs is between 14-18 years. However, both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles suffer from what’s called luxating patellas (loose knees).
Cockapoo Knee Problems
A luxating patella occurs when the dog’s knee cap moves out of its natural position. Symptoms include limping and intermittent skip in the gait eventually leading to corrosion of the joint. Cockapoos may inherit this condition.
Cockapoo Eye Problems
Cockapoos also may inherit a number of eye problems associated with both the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel, such as progressive retinal atrophy (blinding disease).
Cockapoo Ear Infections
Lastly, due to their long, floppy ears, Cockapoo dogs suffer from frequent ear infections. Make sure when your Cockapoo dog goes in the water – whether the pool or bath – you take extra care to dry his ears. Frequently check his ears, even if he hasn’t been in the water.
Cookapoo Dog Grooming
Cockapoo dogs are easy to groom, but they must be groomed frequently. The Cockapoo’s coat will be somewhere between the Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle.
Some Cockapoo coats will have a coat similar to the sleek coat of the Cocker Spaniel, while other Cockapoo dogs may have curlier coats like the poodle. Whichever coat your Cockapoo dog has, it’s low shedding.
However, the coat grows very fast, and the long wavy coat will retain dirt and debris. So you’ll need to have your Cockapoo groomed frequently to prevent matting.
Cockapoo Dog Exercise Needs
Cockapoo Dogs need lots of exercise. This is a high energy dog who loves people, so don’t keep him alone for long periods of time. Take him to the dog run frequently. Hire a dog walker. Cockapoo dogs do great with agility training. Cockapoo dog training should be done immediately.
Enrolling your Cockapoo in an agility training class will help burn off lots of energy. Lastly, if you’re going to be out of the home for long periods of time, I highly recommend you find a cageless doggy daycare center so that your Cockapoo dog won’t be lonely.
