Aggressive Pug Behaviors – How to Stop It

An aggressive pug is not the norm when it comes to the pug breed, but it does happen. Pugs are more well known for their lively, loving, and comical tendencies. Although a small dog, pugs have bossy characteristics which can lead to aggressive behaviors.

What Is Aggressive Behavior For A Pug?

Pugs love being the center of attention and may, at times, actually seem to be demanding it. Although not typically a breed that barks a lot, an aggressive pug may bark and dance around his owner trying to get attention focused on himself. A lunge and nip motion may occur in trying to get that attention.

Pugs normally are very well behaved when in a group or social setting. However, an aggressive pug may become territorial and bossy when his limits are reached.

STOP AGGRESSIVE PUG BEHAVIOR

He may take an intimidating pose and try to warn others that he has had enough. Again, barking, lunging, and snapping behaviors may occur.

This breed has guarding tendencies that can turn into aggressive behaviors. He may guard a piece of furniture and warn others away from it.

This behavior normally develops when the owner has not established himself as the pack leader. Once an aggressive pug is made to understand who the leader is, this kind of behavior goes away.

If a pug thinks that he has been left alone too much, his attention turns to things an owner usually does not like to see. An aggressive pug usually has destructive tendencies when left to his own devices.

How Do I Correct Him?

Pugs can be willful and stubborn, however, their willingness to please their owners does make them trainable. A firm “No” is needed when corrective action needs to be taken. Then, placing them for a short period in a “time out” gated area or in another room should get the point across.

Pugs are also known to love their food and are quite easy to distract from destructive or aggressive behavior with a favorite treat.

A no nonsense “No” when caught displaying a bad behavior and then waving a bone or treat in front of them will cause them to lose interest in what they were doing and redirect their attention.

This breed of dog does very well with a reward and praise method. An aggressive pug will soon realize that bad behavior will only get him ignored and left alone, while good behavior gets him treats and attention from his owner.

Is A Pug A Good Family Dog?

Pugs are excellent family dogs, however, they do have a few special needs that have to be met.

Because their eyes protrude slightly, care must be taken that small children understand they have to be careful with a pug to avoid injury to them.

While most pugs are very tolerant of children, some may need quiet time away from loud play or activities. Children must be trained to respect the dogs privacy when he goes to his quiet or resting place.

Pugs are known to be difficult to house train. While someone who has experience in training pugs may only need a few months to train their pug, it often can take up to a year or more before your pug is trustworthy with his bodily functions.

Children must be taught to avoid squeezing or surprising your pug to avoid unnecessary accidents.
