Stop Chihuahua Biting Quickly
Stopping Chihuahua biting takes a little effort. They have a reputation for being loud and snippy dogs, so sometimes owners believe biting is uncontrollable.
That is not the case. To control Chihuahua biting, we must first understand it. There are many reasons a Chihuahua bites. Review some of the following to determine if your pet falls in that category.
Reasons for Chihuahua Biting
• Previous mistreatment:
If a previous owner mistreated your pet, it is simply protecting itself. Slowly overcome your dog’s fear by showing it love and attention. It will start to trust you and be less afraid of humans.
• Pain due to an injury or medical issue:
Sensitivity to an injury or a medical issue may case your pet to bite. Chihuahua biting happens if your pet is touched in the painful area. If you believe this to be the case, take it to your Vet for a checkup.
• Teething:
If your Chihuahua is teething, it needs something to chew on and instinctively bites. Offer your pet an array of toys to get through this period.
• Protection:
Chihuahua biting can come from your pet protecting its territory or perhaps a new litter of puppies.
How Do You Control Chihuahua Biting?
One thing you need to understand, you cannot train Chihuahua’s like other species of dogs. The best approach to stop your Chihuahua from biting is to turn them on their back.
This simple tactic puts them in a submissive role and tells them that you are in charge. Use single word commands, not sentences, when using this approach. Your pet will understand your meaning when you simply say “No”. You need to teach them that biting is unacceptable.
Something’s You Should Never Do When Controlling Biting
Never strike your Chihuahua or cause it pain or discomfort. Never scare it with loud noises or use threatening gestures. If you use these tactics, you will simply make your Chihuahua fearful of you and they will continue biting.
Teach your Chihuahua what acceptable behavior is. If done properly, your training will stick. Training does not have to be a full time job. Do it a little at a time. Your dog will actually start being the happy, friendly pet you wanted when you selected it.
Repetition and Time is Necessary
Following are some training tips to use when you want to control biting:
• When your Chihuahua bites, act horrified, immediately say “No”, and then ignore it. When you deny your affection, you have control. The tone of your voice will indicate that they did something wrong.
• When you are having fun with your Chihuahua and it is not biting, be sure to praise it.
• When in a quiet part of your house, move your hand in front of its mouth. If it nips at you, strongly say “No” and ignore your pet. If on the other hand it does not nip, praise it with pats and hugs. Repetition of this tactic will teach your dog what behavior is acceptable and what is not.
Only use “No” to indicate bad behavior. If you use it properly, you will have a happy Chihuahua and a happy home. It may take four to six months of training but it will be well worth it!
