Bite inhibition is a dog’s ability to control the force of his bite. This is a very important skill for puppy’s to learn. The sooner they learn it, the better off they’ll be able to socialize with humans and pack animals.
It’s like when you lift weights, you don’t know your own strength. The same with puppies – they don’t know their own strength nor do they realize how sharp their teeth are.
Learning From Reactions of Other Dogs
Puppies learn how to control the level of force they use in their bite by the reaction of their mothers and littermates during play fighting.
Again, you can never stop dog biting completely, as it is in their nature, but you can teach them when to bite and how hard to bite.
Teaching Puppies to Stop Biting
When a puppy plays with his mother and he bites her too hard, the mother will give a sharp yelp and then abruptly stop playing with her pup. This usually is enough for the puppy to realize, he went too far.
But there are those pups who are overly aggressive and don’t get it. In that case, the mother dog nips the pup on the neck and shakes him.
She then rolls him over on his back, snarls her teeth back at him, growls and holds the pup down until his body goes limp.
Be Like the Mother Dog
To get your dog to stop biting, you need to speak to it in dog language. Do like the mother dog does. When your puppy bites you, give a high shriek, growl at the dog and then walk away from him. Don’t play with him for a few minutes.
If that doesn’t sink in, roll him over on his back and keep him pinned down until he stops struggling. Puppies respond to dog language in a very powerful and instinctive way. By mimicking dog language, we can go a long way to effectively stop dog biting.
Don’t Give Him the Wrong Message
We sometimes give puppies the wrong message about biting by some of the games we play with them. Wrestling and tug of war can encourage a puppy to bite and make it hard for him to distinguish when it’s okay to use his teeth and when it’s not. To make it easier for your puppy to learn good manners, it’s a good idea to avoid these games.
